Improvements to the Panelbox Platform

To improve the quality of our services, we always try to find solutions to improve stability and performance in our systems.

For several weeks, our IT team has been working on the Panelbox Platform, the infrastructure that provides iWeb’s shared hosting services.

Since the last series of maintenance performed on these systems, we have implemented several significant improvements. These improvements have been made in consideration of the feedback you have provided us. (more…)

R1Soft Backups and Smart Servers: a winning duo

iWeb promised to continually improve the Smart Server by regularly adding new features and functionalities. A new one just appeared in the Control Center: R1Soft Backups.

You will now be able to backup and restore your Smart Servers’ data and configurations (including MySQL databases) in a few clicks with R1Soft’s easy-to-use web based user interface. Easy activation and management is accessible right from the Control Center. Various available packages offer up to 500GB server backup storage. (more…)

BIND vulnerability affects Plesk for Windows

BIND has announced a vulnerability that can result in a denial of service (server crash) caused by receipt of a specific remote dynamic update message.

Please be aware that this vulnerability will affect all servers that have  Bind 9.7.1 or 9.7.2  installed.  Parallels Plesk Panel 9.5 for windows and Parallels Plesk Panel 10 for windows ships with this version of bind and these servers should be upgraded to Bind 9.7.3 immediately. (more…)

Netcraft, a firm which measures reliability, uptime and network performance, has ranked iWeb.com as one of the most reliable web hosting company sites in January 2011. The reliability performance is monitored every 15 minutes, from several reference points. Netcraft’s measurements will allow you to evaluate reliability of data transfer. Second this month, on list, iWeb has regularly appeared in the top ten over the last year. (more…)

Upgrade to the Jinn and Lumiva email infrastructure

An upgrade to the Jinn and Lumiva email infrastructure is currently in progress.

Jinn and Lumiva are the servers that host email services for our shared hosting service. Clients who obtained hosting services on a Panelbox server within the past two years will not be affected by this upgrade.

Some difficulties with the Plesk 10 upgrade

For several years iWeb has offered Parallels’ Plesk Panel as an excellent, optional, control panel.

Parallels has just released its latest version, Plesk 10 which will be supported on iweb servers shortly. Some users attempting to upgrade from previous Plesk versions to this latest version on their own have experienced some difficulties. (more…)

iWeb successfully obtained SAS 70 Type II Certification

iWeb has successfully been granted Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70 (SAS 70) Type II Certification for its iWeb-CO co-location hosting services data center located in Montreal.

The SAS 70 standard is a widely recognized auditing standard that confirms, after an audit from a independent, external firm, that the company has control procedures and that they are adequately implemented. (more…)

Security exploit identified in Exim

cPanel’s security team has detected a critical exploit on the Exim MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) used on cPanel & WHT. The exploit could potentially allow an attacker to obtain root privileges remotely.

All cPanel Servers using the default Exim configuration are vulnerable. In order to update Exim with a fix please execute the command : /scripts/eximup.

Smart Layer

Release Notes: Control Center 1.0

This is the first public release (version 1.0) of iWeb’s new Control Center that allows customer to manage Smart Servers (dedicated servers deployed using iWeb’s latest server provisioning technology called Smart Layer).

What is the Control Center?

Control Center allows you to manage all aspects of your new Smart Server. Once logged in, you will find easy access to your list of active Smart Servers. Simply click on the server you want to manage to access its Server Administration, Hardware and Network options. 64-bit Linux: important security vulnerability identified

Last friday a security vulnerability affecting 64-bit Linux operating systems has been identified (see: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=CVE-2010-3081 and http://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=CVE-2010-3301).

This vulnerability is potentially very harmful because it allows an ill-disposed hacker to take over a web server and give him full root access thanks to a backdoor. (more…)

6 Creative Ways to Use a Server

If you get a new dedicated server, it’s very likely that you’d use it as a web server, or alternatively as a database server or file (assets) server. These represents the vast majority of cases.

From time to time though, we do see people using a server in very original ways, sometimes with bewilderment, sometimes with a blank stare, but most of the times amazed at the creativity. As a fun exercise, I’ve made a (short) list of creative ways on using a server. A few of them are useful and you could probably and run them on your machine, although my guess is that they’ll stay as as exceptions.  (more…)
