iWeb Closing In On Top 100 Canadian Tech Companies; 2012 Branham 300 Ranking

Published on May 2, 2012 at 9:52 am by iWeb-SDelisle in: iWeb

Montreal, QC, May 2nd, 2012 – iWeb ranks 107th in the 2012 edition of Branham300, the annual list of the 300 largest Internet and Communications Technology (ICT) companies in Canada, based on revenue. iWeb, who incidentally provides cloud computing infrastructure to several of the companies that made this year’s ranking, continues its climb, from 241st in 2006 to 107th in 2012.

First things first: congratulations to all our clients and partners who made it into the 2012 ranking!” says Eric Chouinard, iWeb President and Chairman, recently back from a trade mission in Brazil.

    The company’s 2011 revenues exceeded US $36M, up 24% from $29.5M in 2010.

“This year’s ranking suggests that the Canadian technology industry is in good shape, a very promising indicator for our future growth in the Canadian market,” adds Chouinard, who co-founded the Montreal-based IT Infrastructure company in 1996 with Martin Leclair. “We are delighted to be recognized among the leading Canadian IT companies, and we are particularly proud that our 24% growth rate compares very well with the ranking’s 11.75% average. It would be great to break into the Top 100 next year! ”

According to the Branham Group, Canada’s ICT industry got back on track in 2011, as cumulative revenues for the Top 250 Canadian Tech companies combined to set a new Branham300 revenue record in 2011, increasing sales by 11.75% to $82.62B. The previous year’s growth was only 3.66%.

Since its inception, iWeb has created over 200 jobs, opened four IT and data centers in Montreal and, after being publicly-traded for eight years, completed its privatization in June of 2011. iWeb recently released a new “kinder” Cloud Server service, powered by its Smart Layer technology. Furthermore, it ranked 18th among the 42 Quebec companies who made it into the 2012 ranking and has no intention of slowing its financial or technological growth.

Did you say Open Source on Microsoft Platform?

Published on at 9:56 am by iWeb-SDelisle in: iWeb

    nik
Hi folks, my name is Nik and I’m an Open Source Strategy Lead at Microsoft Canada. Yes, you read it right… Open Source and Microsoft. Many people get surprised when they hear my title, or when I tell them there’s a Technology Centre at Microsoft dedicated to making Open Source apps work well on Windows. Many will probably be surprised to hear that iWeb and Microsoft have been working together to offer a Windows Server package for running many popular Open Source applications. Why are we doing this?

In the past we’ve often heard our customers at iWeb and Microsoft Canada say: “Hey, I want to run a blog, or a CMS on my site. I use Windows, but want to use WordPress, or Drupal, or Joomla! What are you guys doing to make it easy for me?” Well, now we have an easy answer for you!

We’ve created an installer called…. Web Platform Installer — I know, we’re so creative in our naming –specifically for Open Source applications, including many popular PHP apps like WordPress, Gallery 2, Aquia Drupal, and most recently Joomla! It’s easy to get them running on Windows server with just a couple of clicks and filling out simple wizard for admin & database info. WebPI checks the server for what’s installed, such as the right version of PHP, modules, etc., understands all the dependencies, and then goes out and downloads + installs all the components. It’s crazy simple. You can read more on it here.

You may ask us why we care about PHP, or who would want to run OSS apps on Windows? I like the fact that with iWeb’s Windows Server package you get both the PHP and .NET frameworks installed, so now you’ll have access to both PHP apps and also .NET apps like DotNetNuke – from the Web Platform Installer. And you also get your choice of databases including SQL Server 2008 Express. And with iWeb’s dedicated server promo starting at $79/month, it’s an offer you can’t refuse!

I’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions about PHP apps on Windows, as we work with iWeb on more cool offers, so hit me up on twitter @Nik_G or @PHPonWindows.

The power of MySQL : The Storages Engines

Published on at 9:55 am by iWeb-SDelisle in: iWeb

One of the major advantage of MySQL is the power to select, add, create, modify and use different storage engines. MySQL is structured to allows you to choose the one that best suits your needs. If none of the available storage engines do what you need, it’s also possible to add Storage Engines developed by third parties.

Every year, new groups and companies are promoting new engines during the MySQL User Conference. Despite the growing number, a few were more noticeable than others. Amongst the most popular are:
    - Maria (developed by Michael “Monty” Widenius, MySQL founder)
    - Falcon (developed by MySQL AB, now Oracle)
    - Percona XtraDB (developed by Percona)

Of course, there are many others. But how do you know which is best for you? Hard to say. Most people don’t even know the differences between the main Storage Engines supplied with MySQL. Regularly, we face misconceptions such as “MyISAM is faster in read”, or “MEMORY is faster because it’s in RAM”but we shouldn’t be influenced by these claims. Certain factors might get them completely irrelevant.

Beyond performance, you should be aware of the different features available. Sphinx uses full-text indexes for fast searches in large paragraphs. Spider supports XA transactions, partitioning and clustering. These are great alternatives if your application needs the functionality they provide.

But how to choose between two engines that seem to provide the same feature set ? Try comparing the following
    - the different locking mechanisms
    - transactions management
    - the different cache and buffers
    - backup techniques
    - techniques and recovery time
    - partitioning algorithms
    - indexes
    - etc.

These are small details that make a difference! It’s important to know how each of these assets could benefit your application. Not all Storage Engines apply to all situations. You need to know how your application’s requirements are impacted by a Storage engine’s features to make the right choice.

Do you use different storage engines from those provided by MySQL?

    Your Valuable Data Guardian Angel

    bertrand
Hi all, I’m in charge of managing delivery of new products/services with our IT, sales, customer service and Marketing team at iWeb.

I know a few of you will answer that a backup is simply an external hard drive connected to your server. That’s not it. It’s only part of the answer.

For those who may ask the question, RAID is not a backup.I faced with a few customers some situations where even with a RAID5 array, due to failure of 2 disk, the data were totally lost and without a prepared backup plan in place (and a backup on another machine let’s say), data were lost forever. This is just a reminder that RAID is not a backup, it only may help you not to have a server completely down due to a single drive failure.

You have to be prepared with a plan and procedures in case you loose your server/data and settings. Because yes, hard disk drives fail and operating systems can get to a non-recoverable state.

For me, the crucial advantage of R1soft backup solution is that it is image-based.That means that it does an image (at the block level of the OS) of the hard disk drive and can be easily restored using the “bare metal restore” and the last working image.

You do not have to readjust the settings in Windows or Linux in case an OS reinstallation is necessary! Just use the last working image, launch the restore with our team and within one hour (it’s an average time of course), your new server should be ready to serve pages with all your previous settings and files.

The installation is done by our team (can be added after the initial delivery) and the backup are scheduled automatically once a day with a daily log email sent from the system. Also included in the R1soft backupis access to a web-based admin console where you can restore files individually if somehow some files are deleted by mistake on your server.

Last month, we’ve launched the R1soft backup solution that can be now added on a per-GB plan basis as well as a totally dedicated backup server.

Shared backup prices start at $15/month for 15GB of backup. This means even if you have a 500GB HDD, we can set this up as long as your HDD is not using more than 10-15GB. If ever you need more space, we’ll be able to upgrade the backup plan according to your needs.

For those with several servers needs or bigger backup needed, Dedicated R1soft backup servers start at $249/month for 640GB of usable space. That’s it for this time, if ever you would have some questions, do not hesitate to leave your comments.

iWeb Announces Third Quarter Results For Fiscal 2008 : 57% increase in revenues

Published on at 4:36 pm by iWeb-SDelisle in: Press Releases

MONTREAL, QUEBEC – August 12, 2008 – iWeb Group Inc. (TSX-V : IWB) (“iWeb” or the “Company”), a worldwide internet hosting infrastructure provider, today released the financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2008, ended June 30, 2008. The Company’s full interim financial statements and MD&A are available at www.iweb.com and www.sedar.com.

    Third quarter highlights :

    - Revenue increased 57% to $4.1 million for the three months ended June 30, 2008, compared to $2.6 million for the same period in 2007;
    - Adjusted EBITDA¹ increased to $1.0 million for the third quarter of 2008, compared to $0.7 million for the same period in 2007;
    - Infrastructure work has begun on the fourth and final phase of the Couture Data Center;
    - An additional $2.7 million of annually recurring revenue generated in the third quarter.

Revenues have continued to grow steadily in the last quarter,” explains Eric Chouinard, President and CEO of iWeb. “This progress confirms the effectiveness of recently implemented strategies to support our growth: the new web site, launched in March, improved management of advertising strategies, and a new operational structure in the Company’s sales department. Combined with our standard operations, these strategies are generating remarkable results. In the past three months, we have added $2.7 million in annual recurring revenue to our existing revenues, which bodes very well for the upcoming quarters.

Third Quarter of 2008 Financial Review

Revenues for the third quarter ended June 30, 2008 totalled $4.1 million, compared to $2.6 million for the same period of 2007, an increase of $1.5 million, or 57%.

The gross profit margin for the quarter was 49%, compared to 59% for the same period 12 months ago. The strength of the Canadian dollar compared to the U.S. dollar is the main reason for this decrease. The majority of iWeb’s cost of services sold is expensed in Canadian dollars, as opposed to revenues, which are perceived mostly in U.S. dollars. In addition, costs attributed to the co-location site on Nun’s Island, which was brought online on May 1, 2008, have affected the gross profit margin, given the modest revenues recorded thus far for this data center.

Operating expenses have increased, from 47% of revenues one year ago, to 49% of revenues for the third quarter. These additional operating expenses are the result of higher financing costs, due to increased debt facilities, this despite a decrease in sales expenses, the result of the improved management of advertising strategies.

Adjusted EBITDA increased to $1.0 million, or 23% or revenues for the third quarter ended June 30, 2008, compared to $0.7 million, or 27% of revenues for the three months ended June 30, 2007.

Net earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2008 are close to break-even, at $13,210 or $0.0005 per share compared to $200,848 or $0.0085 per share for the corresponding period of 2007. This decrease in net earnings is the direct result of the lower gross profit margin.

    Key Financial Data

      Third quarter ended June 30
      2008 2007
    Revenues 4 108 016 $ 2 613 627 $
    Gross Profit 2 017 936 $ 1 544 860 $
    Net earnings 13 210 $ 200 848 $
    Earnings per share ? basic 0,0005 $ 0,0085 $
    Adjusted EBITDA¹ 960 341 $ 714 369 $
    Total assets 23 246 022 $ *14 788 031 $
    Shareholders’ equity 5 936 543 $ *1 957 453 $
    Cash and term deposits 1 400 084 $ *844 456 $

    *As at September 30, 2007

¹ The Company defines Adjusted EBITDA as Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, and stock-based compensation.

Reacting to illegal or questionable content on servers

Published on July 15, 2008 at 10:55 am by iWeb-SDelisle in: iWeb

Last week, a report by a Canadian media organization suggested that two Web sites linked to presumed terrorist groups were hosted by iWeb. Because such a simplified version of things does not explain the technical complexity of the situation, it is very important for us to clarify any confusion that may have resulted.

Specifically, two websites that promote the activities of suspected terrorist organizations had indeed found their way onto iWeb?s infrastructure; however these sites were shut down as soon as this was confirmed.

In fact, the sites in question were located on the dedicated server of a client. Most iWeb customers are themselves Web hosting companies that sell, provide and support their own Web hosting services to their specific markets, with their own business model. This is possible because iWeb provides Web hosting infrastructure (electricity, network, dedicated servers). However, iWeb is not involved in the actual management of these servers and exerts no control over their contents. This is similar to an Internet Access Provider who provides ACCESS to the Internet, not the Internet itself. The supplier does not control what’s on the Internet, or how it is used.

During the account activation process, all our customers agree to abide by our terms and conditions, as well as Canadian laws. Unfortunately, it happens that this agreement is not respected, or is interpreted differently by end users who often are not direct iWeb customers (they are in fact the customers of our client). As soon as iWeb has confirmation of abusive or illegal use of it?s infrastructure, it is immediately brought to our client?s attention. The client is then requested to take immediate action to resolve the issue. If appropriate measures are not taken within the given delay, iWeb takes preventative measures which, in extreme cases, may include the immediate suspension of all electronic services.

iWeb strives to react quickly and to promptly address all abuse-related reports and complaints. iWeb reminds everyone that it is virtually impossible to control the flow of content that may find its way onto our clients? servers, in addition to any content from our clients? customers.

iWeb encourages every person who notices or suspects any illegal or abusive use of our network to report it as soon as possible by sending a detailed e-mail to the following address: abuse@iweb.com. Thank you in advance for your vigilance.

For a more detailed explanation, please continue reading.

    Online Transactions and Anti-Fraud Measures

Published on July 4, 2008 at 11:33 am by iWeb-SDelisle in: iWeb

    cvv2
Since the new iWeb.com was brought online in March, the volume of online transactions has increased substantially. At the same time, we have also seen a steady increase in the quantity of fraudulent transaction attempts. To ensure high levels of security and protection against these types of transactions, we have recently put several new measures in place to detect fraudulent attempts more efficiently.

Of course, our goal is to avoid causing our clients difficulties and to keep the payment process as simple as possible. These modifications will not have any major impacts on current operations, though you will notice a few differences.

First of all, the most noticeable of these new measures will be the use of the CVV number for online payments and purchases. The CVV is the additional set of three or 4 numbers typically found on the reverse side of your credit card (see illustration below), and is used to confirm that the person making the payment has physical access to the card.

Second, for our clients whose monthly payment is automatically done by pre-authorized payment on their credit card, the next payment will have to be done manually online, which will simultaneously update your credit card info including the CVV code. Detailed instructions will be sent to concerned clients shortly.

Finally, for AMEX cardholders, transactions will be delayed for a few days – payment from these cards will only be possible once an adjustment to the system is completed. We will post an update as soon as these transactions will be accepted once again.

If you are experiencing difficulties making your payment or if it is erroneously identified as a fraudulent transaction, please let us know and we will address the situation as quickly as possible. For all your questions, please contact the billing department at billing@iweb.com or by telephone at 514-286-4242, option 3 then option 2. (For toll-free numbers in your area, please visit www.iweb.com)

Update: As this seems to be a preocupation for some customers, note that we do not store the CVS/CVV number of your card. We do not even store your credit card number on our side. Only our payment processing partner stores your card number. We only send our payment processing partner a transaction ID that allows us to bill your card monthly but we never store your card number.

iWeb in the PROFIT 100 ranking

Published on June 10, 2008 at 12:22 pm by iWeb-SDelisle in: iWeb

    iWeb makes the profit100

We are proud to announce our entrance into the PROFIT 100 ranking as one of the Canadian companies with the strongest revenue growth over the past 5 years.

From 2002 to 2007, our revenues have gone from 1.35 million to 9.82 million as of October 1st 2007, an increase of 627%; enough for iWeb to make its entry into the 100th position on the annual ranking.

The increase in revenue is not necessarily the measure of our success, but rather the cumulative result of all our successes combined. Our listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX-Venture) in 2004 has been an important milestone in this development.

iWeb has transformed itself a lot since 2002. In 5 years we have gone from 19 to 104 employees, from 500 square feet of web hosting facilities to more than 52 000 square feet in three datacenters, including the opening of a carrier-neutral colocation facility on Nun?s Island in May 2008. Growth management has become as important as technological management.

The PROFIT 100 is the annual ranking which rates the top 100 Canadian companies based on the percentage of their revenue growth over a 5-year span. Produced by the business magazine PROFIT, 2008 marks the 20th edition of the ranking. The complete list will be published in the June edition, as well as on the website: www.profit100.com

This is Ariana, the star behind the Sitepal!

Published on March 6, 2008 at 6:54 pm by iWeb-SDelisle in: Web Development, iWeb

    ariana2
As you already know from the last few weeks, our new website is about to see the light pretty soon. Several new features have been added but we would like to talk about one in particular, the sitepal. For those who are not familiar with this communication tool, sitepal is an online service that uses animated virtual agents to provide any kind of information.

Why the sitepal integration? Quite simply because we find the idea of this virtual character fun and it brings a bit of dynamism and accessibility that for us very well reflects what we are!
That is not all, the sitepal is not just any kind of digitalized robot without a soul, behind the image lies an exceptional collaborator working for iWeb for several years; We present you Ariana!

    Click to hear her speak

You will see the charismatic Ariana appear very soon on your screens and she has a lot of interesting things to tell you, therefore, stay tuned when you see her! In addition to being present shortly on our new website, Ariana will also be featured in several corporate flavored videos that will make their apparations in the coming weeks, more details will be sent to you regarding that matter.

Finally, we would like to have your impressions about our spokesperson that is the sitepal. Do you find this practical? Are you tempted to take a look at it? Send us your comments, we want to know what you think about this addition.
