Web Cluster : Don’t Try This at Home
A Swedish working in the movie industry has built is own cluster in order to improve the rendering speed of its videos. To do so, he had to use a typically Swedish product : an IKEA cabinet.
Of course, it is an interesting experiment, but it has nothing to do with web clusters as offered by iWeb. A cluster to execute tasks such as video rendering needs a smaller system.
A web cluster uses at least two servers and load balancers to ensure high disponibity of your web services. A little drawing ?

The web cluster uses load balancing to send your visitors? requests to available servers. If a server fails, it is automatically removed from the available servers pool and your visitors are sent to servers capable of serving your web site’s functionalities.
Note that we don’t have any IKEA cabinets in our datacenters.
Installing Wordpress on its birthday
Blogs are a huge part of what constitutes today’s web. Their growth is exponential, and content publishing systems for blogs are constantly improving. It is the case of Wordpress, one of the most popular of those softwares. Wordpress (which powers this blog, by the way), provide tools to easily manage a blog.
Today is Wordpress fifth anniversary.
Recently, Automattic published Wordpress’ 2.5 version which brings many changes such as a brand new design for its dashboard. The new version allows, among other things :
- Multi-file upload with progress bar;
- Tag management;
- Password strength meter;
- Few-click plugin upgrades;
- Built-in galleries.
Installing Wordpress on iWeb?s servers is pretty easy, and many options are available. Wordpress requires a hosting plan including Apache and PHP and a MySQL database. It is therefore possible to use it on all iWeb?s servers under Linux
Shared hosting : Shared hosting customers that benefit from Panelbox can use the ?instant presence? to install Wordpress in one click. Just visit the ?Software? section and choose ?Fantastico? to access the installation menu. For others, simply upload to your server Wordpress’ files through FTP protocol and follow the installation instructions provided by Wordpress.
Dedicated hosting : If your dedicated server uses a control panel like Plesk or cPanel where Fantastico is installed, you can also install Wordpress in one click. Otherwise, you can always follow Wordpress’ instructions on their website.
Usually, in order to operate a simple blog, a shared hosting environment is enough. However, the popularity of some bloggers is so huge that their sites receive many thousands visitors a day. Many of the top bloggers are using Wordpress as their blogging platform. What about you ?
Shaved Head Challenge : encourage an iWeb employee
For a second year in a row, one of iWeb’s employee participates in the Shaved Head Challenge which aims at collecting funds to fight children’s cancer. This time, Yves Lafond, Customer accounts manager, is going to shave is head for the cause.

The Shaved Head Challenge, organized by LEUCAN is five years old and since then, 16,000 persons from Québec got their head shaved. You’d agree that it’s a lot of hairs !
“In 2007, the event set a new record of 6,550 shaved heads and raised close to $3.4 million! It was held in 26 locations throughout the province“, as explained on the Challenge website.
We would like to invite you to encourage Yves before june 8th in order for him to reach his 1000$ objective, an amount of money that will help, let’s hope, to give better living conditions to sick children who should not have to suffer this way.
iWeb spins for cancer
As planned, iWeb’s employees spinned for the cause of cancer last friday during the Yellow Pages Spinothon. The event went really well and (almost) every registrants have taken up the challenge.
We have made a little video of this day highlights, a day which ended with an happy hour in iWeb’s backyard. A great opportunity to try our brand new barbecue. Note that the video is a subtle reference to the Tour de France and is a tribute to the strength of character of our cyclists.
Here are some photographs taken during the day :

Stéphane Guérin : Why It Pays to Outsource Server Management
To illustrate the various ways our customers use our services, to demonstrate the benefits from outsourcing web hosting, to give a little visibility to our clients which often offers great services, or simply to present different points of vue on the web hosting industry, we though it would be a good idea to invite bloggers on iWeb’s blog.
Let’s begin with Stéphane Guérin, a well-known blogger in Québec and France who is also running Percute Technologies, a web analytics service which is getting more and more popular. Thanks to Stéphane to have accepted our invitation.
Steph and hosting
iWeb Technologies asked me if I would be interested in writing a blog about web hosting. There were two reasons behind the request: 1. iWeb’s purpose is to host people like me. 2. Because for people like me, having servers in a secure environment is critical… and I just plain liked the idea, so let’s go.
So, Steph, why is hosting important for you?
As for many people, I am really busy. Web development is my expertise, not server management. Espacially not hardware, which is something I don’t get along with. In order to host my sites such as Tout Le Monde en Blogue, my blog, or a critical online application like Percute Analytique, I need top quality servers, but also an environment and support to ensure a 99.99% uptime.
As a small business, we don’t have the means and ressources to maintain a quality datacenter: server updates, backups, generator, cooling system, security, etc. And I won’t even talk about the network administrator I would have to hire.
But Steph, why are you hosting your sites in Montreal at iWeb?
Let me tell you an anecdote to illustrate my point. While looking for the lowest price, I had found a host in Kentucky (not the chicken guy, but the state in the USA). For a still unknown reason, they closed my account without any warning and without any possibility of recuperating my data. Can you imagine the mess ?
Fortunately, it was only the beginning of my operations so I did not lose much. It could however have been really tragic if it had come further along the line. . Since then, I have sworn that I would never outsource my servers someplace I could not reach to kick some butt if need be.
Why iWeb ?
Ironically, after explaining my anecdote on my blog, iWeb’s boss (I’ve got VIP readers, you know !) offered their services. By talking with him, I realized iWeb had really competitive prices. Furthermore, they speak my language, what else could I ask ?
Why don’t you host everything at your place?
I’ve talked about it a little already : it’s to complicated when you’re not a specialist. Until we have enough volume to justify investing in a room with regularly updated servers, it isn’t worth it. And there is always the people I’d have to hire. Not many businesses can afford such infrastructure.
Manage my own servers? As little as possible. Outsource to experts using a turnkey service where I have nothing to do except taking care of my sites? Count me in !
A Spinothon for the Canadian Cancer Society in iWeb’s neighborhood
This Friday May 16th, an event will take place just beside iWeb’s Nuns Island building. It is organized by the Yellow Pages Group in order to collect funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.
For the occasion, many maneges, a Spinothon and all sort of activities are planned. iWeb decided to participate to the Spinonthon, and nine employees will relay to spin for nine hours on a stationary bike. We hope there will be a medical team nearby because not everyone is in good shape. Some even panic a little when they saw the video of last year happening…
Last year, the Spinothon had helped raise more than $ 30000 for the cause.
So we would like to invite you and your family to join us for the event. Kids should have a lot of fun with all the maneges available. Here are some photographies of the “theme park” just to tease you. Well, it’s a bit sad with the cloud, but Friday should be better !

Here is the address so you can get there without any problem :

iWeb Reports Fiscal 2008 Second Quarter Result
MONTREAL, QUEBEC, May 13, 2008 iWeb Group Inc. (TSX-V: IWB) (“iWeb” or the Company), a worldwide internet hosting infrastructure provider, announces its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2008 ended March 31, 2008. All results are reported in Canadian dollars unless otherwise stated. The Company’s full interim financial statements and MD&A will be available at www.iweb.com and www.sedar.com.
Q2-2008 Summary
- 56% increase in revenues to $3.6 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2008 compared to $2.3 million for the same period of 2007
- Adjusted EBITDA1 of $0.8 million for the second quarter, a 71% increase over the same period of fiscal 2007
- Company’s new website is now on-line: iweb.com
- Completion of work on phase 3 of Couture data center
- Completion of work on phase 1 of Nuns’ Island data center, and installation of first customers
?Our financial results show once again a steady growth in revenues and adjusted EBITDA? comments Martin Leclair, Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of iWeb. ?Everything seems to indicate that our growth will continue: the occupancy rate of our principal data center for dedicated servers is quickly increasing and we will soon begin the work on the last phase for that site; phase one of work of our new co-location data center of Nuns’ Island is almost completed and we already welcomed our first customers; our new website under the domain name iweb.com is now on-line and features additional products and functionalities, and we can already notice that it had a positive impact on the number of visits on our website and on new recurring revenues. Therefore, the current trend is very positive and explains our optimism over our future growth.
Second Quarter of 2008 Financial Review
Consolidated revenues of the second quarter ended March 31, 2008 were $3.6 million, compared to $2.3 million for the same period of 2007, an increase of $1.3 million or an improvement of 56%. Without taking in account the impact of the stronger Canadian dollar against the U.S. currency, growth in revenues would have been even better since 75% of Company?s revenues are generated in U.S. dollars.
Gross profit margin for the quarter was 53%, compared to 56% for the corresponding quarter of fiscal 2007. This decrease is mainly explained by the strength of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. currency. Contrary to revenues, a great portion of cost of services sold is expensed in Canadian dollars.
Operating expenses decreased to 52% of revenues for the second quarter of 2008, compared to 55% for the same period of last year. This improvement is mainly explained by a better control on advertising expenses, and by interest revenues generated by investments in term deposits coming from the net proceeds from the issuance of shares of November 2007. These positive impacts in operating expenses were partly reduced by higher stock-based compensation expenses.
Adjusted EBITDA increased to $0.8 million, or 23% of revenues, for the quarter ended March 31, 2008, compared to $0.5 million, or 21% of revenues for the same three-month period of previous fiscal year, an improvement of 71% year-over-year.
Net earnings remained nearly at the same level of the preceding year and were $19,225 or $0.0007 per share for the quarter ended March 31, 2008, compared to $21,710 or $0.0009 per share for the same period one year-ago.

iWeb wins the ESTim award in the Investment Project category
Last Friday was the 20th edition of the ESTim award held by the Montreal East Island Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Patrice M. Pelletier, President and CEO of the Port of Montreal was the host for the evening. The actor and singer Frédéric De Grandpré was also part of the event.

iWeb was there for the occasion and is really proud to have received the ESTim award in the “Investment project” category. It seems that the efforts made in the establishment and expansion of our St-Leonard datacenter are paying off.
If iWeb has already invested a lot in the East Island, other enhancements are planned for iWeb-CL datacenter. We’ll keep you posted about it.
RAID illustrated
For many people, RAID is an obscure concept. Fortunatly, somebody with to much time on their hands (not on company time, we hope) decided to shine some light on the confusing world of RAID with? bottles of water :
We’ll give them an ‘A’ for effort…
In fact, RAID means “Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks” and “is a technology that employs the simultaneous use of two or more hard disk drives to achieve greater levels of performance, reliability, and/or larger data volume sizes.” More details can be found on Wikipedia.
RAID controllers are available on all of iWeb?s dedicated servers and, among other things, can be used to run a backup server.
Drupal 6 and the server you need
There are many content management systems which allow, when installed on a server, to easily and quickly publish Web content of any kind. Among those CMS, Drupal is certainly one of the most popular because it’s open source, and because it can count on a very active developers community.
Drupal offers several modules that let you create blogs, forums, polls, wikis, and collaborative books.
Last february, Drupal released its sixth version which includes many new features such as a new easy installation process, languages selection, signing up using OpenID, update notification, and improved speed and security of the system.
Installing Drupal on iWeb’s servers is pretty easy, and many options are available. Drupal requires a hosting plan including Apache or IIS, PHP and MySQL database or PostgreSQL. It is therefore possible to use it on all iWeb’s servers.
Shared hosting : Shared hosting customers that benefit from Panelbox can use the “instant presence” to install Drupal in one-click. Just visit the “Software” section and choose “Fantastico” to access the installation menu. For others, simply upload to your server Drupal’s files through FTP protocol and follow the installation instructions provided by Drupal.
Dedicated hosting : If your dedicated server uses a control panel like Plesk or cPanel where Fantastico is installed, you can also install Drupal in one-click. Fantastico allows to install many other softwares in one-click. Otherwise, you can always follow Drupal’s instructions on their website.
The choice between shared or dedicated hosting to manage a website running Drupal depends mainly on the number of visitors planned on your site, as well as the type of content therein. If you expect to receive several thousand visits per month or you intend to publish video content, a dedicated server could be needed.
Drupal is a very powerful software that runs many famous sites. It’s the case with NowPublic, a Canadian citizen journalism Web site, Linux Journal, Rue89 a French media, The Onion a satirical American site, and Ubuntu website the popular Linux distribution. Who knows, maybe you are at a few clicks from a potential site of success …
Why outsourcing hosting infrastructure might be a good idea
Some companies are still reluctant to outsource their server management although there is many benefits one could get from hosting companies such as iWeb.
Les Affaires newspaper has recently published a special report (in french) about servers for businesses that was talking about, among other things, iWeb’s services. The newspaper used, as an example, the case of a Montreal based company, Logiweb, which is really grateful to have outsourced its server management to iWeb : “Our objective, by using iWeb as a partner, is to focus on our specialization, which is the optimization of human ressources management, and to leave the other tasks to the experts“, explains Yves Forget from Logiweb.
Among the benefits of outsourcing, there is of course the advantage of being able to rely on experts, but also to avoid the hassle of finding qualified workers and to avoid paying for costly hosting infrastructures within the company. “Our servers at Logiweb costed us many thousand dollars in equipment and time. However, as for the servers we use for our customers, iWeb offers cost-effective services which allowed us to save on the initial investment“.
The Infoworld magazine also reported the case of the Bazaarvoice website who, having outsourced the management of its infrastructure, is able to manage its IT operations with only two employees out of a total of 200.
Furthermore, web hosts such as iWeb offer redundant services and a secure environment, far away from disasters. Logiweb story of a fire in their offices really well illustrates this situation : “Fortunately, all the servers who served our customers was in iWeb datacenter. We were therefore able to continue to offer all our customer a service without interruption even though our building was on fire !”

According to Infoworld, the fact that hosting infrastructures are increasingly complex also invites companies to outsource. Considering that the success on the Internet is sometimes unpredictable and that the demand for resources can quickly gain momentum, it is necessary for companies to adapt to the demand, and hosting companies are in a better position to help. Also according to Infoworld, promotional sites used over a short period of time are also a growing market whose needs are met effectively by hosting companies.
In conclusion, the benefits to outsource Web sites hosting are numerous, and we won’t hide the fact that we suggest iWeb datacenters to do it !
iWeb moves its headquarter to Nuns’ Island
Last week-end, iWeb moved its headquarter in a new building in Nuns’ Island, Montreal. The Sales, marketing, accounting departments along as manager’s offices are now under the same roof. It is the third headquarter of iWeb?s history.
The building also includes a 12,000 square feet datacenter set to host servers in colocation and those square feet are selling like hot cakes.
Here’s a few pictures of the new place.
The building is circled by trees and we are certainly planning to get out there and listen to the singing birds while eating on the grass.
Security is not an option for us, there is almost ten doors requiring an access card before entering office.
The datacenter is wide and bright.
Bagels and muffins were waiting for us in the kitchen, but we are still waiting for a cofee machine.
Office spaces are so wide that people at the other end seem really small.
Some took the opportunity to clean up their desks. Menus from restaurants nearby our old office were sent to the recycle bin.

We have many windows which is great since summer has finaly arrived !
iWeb, proud sponsor of Shutdown Day
Shutdown Day 2008, which is intended to raise awareness about the dangers of computer extended use, will occur on may 3rd and iWeb is proud to be part of it by providing the necessary infrastructures for this day to run smoothly. You can now close your computers without any concern.
Even if the event organizers say that stopping the activities of our datacenters would generate an economy of energy equivalent to 111,659 boilers heating at the same time, it is our duty to stay online. The only solution we found so everyone could shutdown their computer is to keep our servers up and running.
”Shutdown Day is extremely thankful to iWeb Technologies, the leading Internet hosting and infrastructure solutions company from Montreal, for generously donating the necessary infrastructure and bandwidth for the Shutdown Day campaign event for the year 2008“, says Ashutosh, co-founder of Shutdown Day.
Radio-Canada and Montreal Tech Watch, among others, have already talked about Shutdown Day.
Computers all over the world, be assured that iWeb will always be a safe place to those whose owners would like to take a day off.

Here’s something that won’t happen to your server
There are catastrophes that could be avoided. Even if we already showed you that a server will sometimes work when completely submerged, water is generally not welcomed into a datacenter, as demonstrated in the video from an unknown center, at the end of this post.
Of course, iWeb’s servers are well protected against water floods. None of them are located in basements. Our datacenters are equipped with many drains and they are simply not situated in risk zones.
I had a bad experience back in the 90?s, when it rained on my modem because of an open window and it lost some of its 14,400 bps. However, this can not happen to iWeb’s datacenters since there are no windows (neither in my office, but that’s another story).
So the risks are so small that really, it’s a non-issue. We just wanted to share these images with you so you can laugh or cry.
iWeb in Europe for a Trade Mission
Always ready to broaden its horizons, iWeb is flying to Europe with nine other businessmen from Quebec for a Trade Mission, between march 28th and april 5th. The purposes of this trip is to establish contacts with european decision makers, but also to show how we can get things done.
The mission is organized by the Young Chamber of Commerce of Québec (RJCCQ):
?In a globalized business world, we are really happy to offer to ten young businessmen from Québec the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the European Union Model, to seize commercial opportunities, and to build a solid relation with european partners. The european market is perfect for Québec companies, and we believe that, after this mission, these ten businessmen will have the necessary skills and knowledge to help them conquer this market.? says Martin Thibault, RJCCQ president.
iWeb counts many european clients, and this trip is a great occasion to consolidate the company presence in those countries.
You can read the RJCCQ press release (in french) on the CNW website.
P.S. feel free to invite us if something is organized in Hawaii!

Spam filtering : how to make sure that Hotmail and others don’t exclude your legitimate emails
Over the past few years, the exponential increase in the volume of spam has forced email service providers to apply increasingly aggressive filtering solutions which sometimes exclude legitimate emails. In order to reduce the chances that your emails are perceived as spam from major suppliers such as Yahoo, Hotmail, Google or AOL, please make sure your server meets the following qualifications :
1) A valid “PTR” Record (Reverse-DNS) is configured on your IP address.
A PTR Record is essentially the hostname that is shown when a reverse lookup query is done on an IP address. This type of query is always done by default and the result is shown in email headers. Having a configured or customized PTR record will help giving your server more credibility when sending emails.
An optimal PTR record would be the server’s principal hosted domain.
You can have your Reverse DNS configured or changed by opening an assistance request with our system administration team.
2) The email addresses: abuse@
Feedback loop is an email address used to report spam abuses for a certain IP address. This address is abuse@ and/or postmaster@. AOL asks that these account exists and that they accepts emails.
3) A “TXT” DNS entry that contains a valid SPF record is configured for the domains hosted on your server.
By default, anyone can send emails from any domains by spoofing email addresses. A SPF record will restrict the IP addresses or hostnames allowed to send e-mails from the domains it will be configured on.
You can generate a SPF record by using the OpenSPF Wizard.
By having the two conditions above met, the verifications made by the email service providers are likely to determine that your IP address can be trusted and will refer to other criterias to verify wether a specific email is considered unsolicited.
If you wish to know more about how email delivery works and ways to raise your delivery rate, you can review the following website: http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/solutions/dns.html
Do not hesitate to contact our team if you have any questions or require assistance.

iWeb Announces Fiscal 2008 First Quarter Results
MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC ? February 12, 2008 ? iWeb Group Inc. (TSX-V: IWB) (?iWeb? or the ?Company?), a worldwide internet hosting infrastructure provider, announces its financial results for the three-month period ended December 31, 2007. All results are reported in Canadian dollars unless otherwise stated.
Q1-2008 Summary
- ? Revenue of $3.2 million, a 62% increase in revenues compared to first quarter of previous fiscal year
- ? Adjusted EBITDA1 of $0.8 million, a 65% increase over the first quarter of fiscal 2007
- ? Closing of a 3.3 million of shares public offering with gross proceeds of $4.1 million
- ? Beginning of installation work of the Nuns? Island premises for a new co-location data center
?Our steady growth in revenues and adjusted EBITDA continued in this quarter? explained Marc Guindon, Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of iWeb. ?We are currently working to keep that growth level, with the completion of phase three of our second data center of dedicated servers. In addition, with the addition of the coming installation of Nuns? Island, we will increase our revenue source in the co-location services. Proceeds received from the November public offering will help in financing a portion of the current work. We are currently in discussions in order to obtain additional financing to complete the necessary investments required to keep our growth level.?
First Quarter of 2008 Financial Review
For the first quarter of 2008, consolidated revenues increased $1.2 million or 62% to $3.2 million compared to the same quarter of last year. This revenue growth can be attributed primarily to a steady rise in dedicated server demand.
Gross profit margin for the first quarter of fiscal 2008 was in line with last year margin at 54%. The benefits of tight operating cost control were offset by the decrease in value of the U.S. dollar against the Canadian dollar, having a negative effect on Company?s revenues in the last quarter. More than 70% of iWeb revenues are generated in U.S. currency.
Total operating expenses for the quarter ended December 31, 2007, were 53% of revenue, compared to 47% for the same three-month period of fiscal 2007. This increase in expenses is attributable to a higher level of activities resulting from the Company?s organic growth, specifically resulting in higher overhead expenses. In addition, increase in stock-based compensation expense, resulting from a higher stock price in the last year, impacted the administration expenses in the last quarter. Financial expenses were also higher, in line with the additional financing facilities obtained in order to pay for the additions in iWeb infrastructures.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 65% to $0.8 million, or 25% of revenues, in the last quarter, compared to $0.5 million, or 24% of revenues, for the three-month period ended in December of 2006. This is an increase of 65%.
Net earnings were $18,026 or $0,0007 per share compared to $92,995 or $0.0040 per share one year-ago. As discussed, net earnings for the last quarter were impacted by a stronger Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar, by higher overhead costs in order to support the Company?s growing operations, and by a higher non-deductible share-based compensation expenses which have also a negative impact on the Company?s effective tax rate, increasing it to 42%, from 32% in the first quarter of fiscal 2007.
