OpenStack Summit – “Linux of the Cloud” Gathers Momentum

Published on at 11:27 am by iWeb Technologies in: Web Marketing Articles

openstackDevelopment of OpenStack, the open-source cloud operating system, is gathering momentum thanks to the work of a growing community.

That community was out in force at the OpenStack summit, which took place in San Diego from October 15-18, and iWeb was there to learn more about the new developments that seem to be promising the arrival of the “Linux of the Cloud”.

Growing community

OpenStack is an open-source platform for public and private clouds, being developed by a global collaboration of developers and cloud computing technologists. Nasa and Rackspace started the OpenStack project in 2010 with the aim of building an operating system that can create and control a large-scale public or private cloud in a relatively easy and extensible way.

Since then, as more and more companies try to find their way into the cloud, OpenStack has become an increasingly relevant and attractive proposition, earning interest from an ever wider and more diverse audience.

Many people believe that OpenStack will become “the Linux of the cloud”. That is to say, the common open-source platform used by most clouds in the world. And just like Linux, one of the biggest strengths of the project is its growing community, evidenced by the sold-out summit event in San Diego and the increasingly high-profile names affiliated with the project.

More than 1,400 people attended this year’s event compared to just 75 people at the very first summit, and dozens of major players from different parts of the hosting industry are now backing the project. They include hardware companies like Dell and HP, OS developers like Canonical and RedHat, hosting providers like Rackspace and Dreamhost, and integrators like Mirantis and Cloudscaling.

Folson Release

The latest OpenStack release was on the agenda at the summit, which is the biggest single event for members of the community to share their experiences and talk about forthcoming releases. A new version of OpenStack is released every 6 months, and it is at the summit that roadmap decisions are made. (more…)

Here we grow again!

In order to meet our continued growth and to plan for future complex hosting solutions, iWeb has started an expansion project at the Nun’s Island colocation facility (iWeb-CO). This project will double the electrical footprint in order to increase the data center’s hosting capacity from 600 kW to 1200 kW. As is standard with all of our facilities, the current N+1 redundancy level for the electrical (UPS and generator) and mechanical (cooling unit) levels will be maintained.

This project will be completed in two phases and is structured so that there will be no impact to our customers. The initial phase of this project consists of the replacement of all twelve air conditioning units by new, top of the line energy efficient units of higher capacity. These units will take advantage of our colder climate to minimize energy consumption. A second phase will follow with the installation of a fourth UPS, a third generator and the upgrade of the Hydro-Québec electrical entrance. The initial phase is already in progress and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. The second phase will be executed by Spring 2013.

iWeb is committed to and executes regular capacity planning and facilities upgrades to ensure high availability in all our facilities. We thank all of our customers for their continued business.

Green hosting with iWeb, supported by Insertech

iWeb ensures that its computer equipment is reused and recycled wherever possible, with the help of our partner Insertech Angus computer recycling.

Like any large IT infrastructure company, iWeb faces the major challenge of managing an enormous amount of server and hosting hardware. Maintaining four data centers with a total capacity of nearly 35,000 servers is not an easy task.

And when we consider how we manage our equipment, as with all our practices, iWeb is concerned about energy efficiency, recycling and the environment. That might be because we live in Quebec, where the seasons and surroundings mean the environment is never too far from people’s minds.

Quebec is one of the largest producers of sustainable energy in North America, notably due to its production of Hydro Electric power. Combined with the cold winter air that we use for keeping servers cool, this means we can boast data centers that are among the greenest, cleanest and most efficient in North America and the world.

And when a piece of equipment has finished its life in one of our data centers, iWeb makes sure that it is responsibly disposed of, into a computer recycling program provided to us by Insertech.
