What is N+1?
As mentionned last week, we swtiched to a N+1 system for the UPS of our CO data center. Since we received several questions about this update, here are quick details about the N+1 system.
The N+1 standard is used in computer science and in infrastructure for a number of appliances (N) and an additional equipment (+1) whose mission is to get the whole system to continue service if there is downtime. It’s similar to the RAID-1 standard explained in this post.
To sum it up, we have an additional independant UPS in the CO data center. If there is an electrical problem from our supplier, the primary UPS will be up, and if this primary unit goes also down, the additional UPS (+1) will take charge. The risks that there is an electrical downtime in the CO data center are greatly diminished.
