Quantum of Solace?

Bernard Dahl wonders how the evolution of James Bond relates to web hostingI grew up watching James Bond movies. I have, in fact, seen all of them. For the most part, James Bond movies have always been built around the same model, though this has started to change recently. Casino Royale had a new (blonde) Bond, and did not use the “shaken, not stirred” line. In the new Quantum of Solace, we don’t even get a “Bond, James Bond“, and there aren’t really any gadgets. Basically, there are virtually none of the things we have come to expect from a Bond movie.

But Bernard, how does this relate to the hosting business?

Well, if nothing had been done to change or update the Bond movies, the producers would have been just fine. They would have survived comfortably, and easily continued to put out profitable movies that appealed to Bond fans worldwide. Not a bad outlook, really. Many web hosting companies are comfortably sitting back knowing that the market for web and server hosting will be auto-sufficient for the near future. And the fact is: you’ll probably be fine if you keep doing what’s worked for years…

Instead, EON Productions challenged everything comfortable about their job and mission. They questioned everything that Bond movies are, for better or for worse. They even questioned Bond himself; the character they had turned him into. They then decided to make an exciting new movie, not just “another Bond adventure”. Like it or not, the new 007 is building an army of new followers in the process. They have reinvented their business, and have become relevant again. They decided to focus on the core; instead of relying on the conclusions of the past 45 years.

It’s all in the questions, really:

  • Will Web hosting (as a stand alone service) be relevant for the next generation?
  • What happens when Search engines are no longer an easy way to generate leads?
  • Can most 15 year-olds today use FTP? Do they really need to?
  • What are your clients REALLY looking for when they buy web hosting or lease dedicated servers?
  • Do e-mail customers need e-mail itself, or do they need to communicate easily?
  • Does your hosting service help your clients sell more/better products or services? Can it?

  1. Put it simply, change is only as good as how far ahead we leap with it.

Quantum of Solace was not up to par. A very disappointing storyline, worse acting and where did the 007 gadgets disappear? Where is Mr. Q? Things that made the 007 brand are no longer part of it.

  2. I thought Quantum of Solace is more about Jason Bourne than James Bond.

For change, I liked better the older James Bonds.. but it’s a personal opinion :-)

  3. It is about revenge. But James Bond is not a story of revenge. It is a tale of a spy doing everything he can to save humanity, and his reward are the many talented and sexy ladies he seduce along.

The last James Bond was filled with mixed emotions, feeling of guilts, revenge and unwarranted ambitions….not what I’m looking for in James Bond movie. But some people liked it, I guess as you said it is a matter of opinion.

  4. They may as well have got Tom Cruise to direct this film as it is just as screwed up as ‘Mission Impossible’ was stuffed by Cruise and his violent and stupefying ideas.

ATTENTION SONY PICTURES – Get back to the REAL BOND and maybe you won’t poo-the-pooch with the next version like you have with this one. Firstly please don’t have the intro overlayed with a screeching song that nobody would ever play or want to endure again. The plot is disjointed and obscure, the action is bland and way over the top and just too much violent action and death.
I guess your script writers have no real imagination and continuity anymore. You just need to get back to basics and have a hard look at what Ian Flemming was trying to say, before you ruin a good thing with another dud.
I have been an avid fan of Bond for 30 years and this current offering is a dismal disappointment. What a shame as technically and visually it could have been a masterpiece. Better luck next time or its goodbye to Bond. What a sad waste of resources and talent.

  5. my opinion is that -Quantum of Solace- is the most terrible film of the personality James Bond !
    i hate it so much.
    thank you.
